The people I play baseball with are a lot of fun. We are kind of a unique mix of people, certainly with different personalities and levels of baseball skill. One of the things I enjoy about these people – they let me play with them! It feels good to be included and even better when you contribute to the teams success (winning, it matters, that is why we keep score). Another thing I appreciate is the mutual desire to encourage each other. And this desire is usually followed up by words of cheer in the field or at bat. Even when you (me) mess up, strike out, muff a throw, send a runner when you shouldn’t,…they are gracious. Those kind of things make us a good team, but it also helps when we are victorious. I like that we cheer for the other team at the end of the game, that we don’t openly mock the opposition, that we go to Dairy Queen and get ice cream. It’s fun to hang out with their kids and be with people in “another” setting. Hopefully, at the end of the season we’ll have a BBQ together, regardless how the playoffs go.
I think we all need people with us and around us that add in a positive way in our lives. I don’t think it will always be a sports team. This just seems so natural, not forced, but with purpose. It appears to be a picture of ministry to me, and it sounds like Jesus amoung us - John 1:14 The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood.
